Last week we were talking about Green & Berry and how they managed to make healthy eating easier than ever. Since then we have heard of so many people who went to the coffee shop and loved it that we decided to continue with the health craze for a week longer.
And this time we’re not necessarily talking about gluten and dairy-free food, but rather about a place which has quality products that are for the most part grown in proximity. The store is called Casa Ruiz and it just opened in Barcelona less than a month ago.
We went there last Friday looking for a place where we could get good quality ingredients to make dinner with. Little did we know that this store is about so much more than just selling good products. Joan, one of the place’s managers, walked us through the whole story.
The store was actually first founded in Madrid by a friend of Joan who moved to the city a few years ago. From what Joan told us, his friend Xavi Ripoll has always enjoyed buying all of his groceries in bulk. And when he moved to Madrid he found that, as great as the city was, he had no access to a store where he could know exactly what and how much he bought.
That inspired him to make the biggest change in his life so far: he completely changed his career path to that point and opened up a store in order to provide that service himself.
And a funny story is the one behind the name of the store: as you probably will have noticed, Ruiz is not Xavi’s surname. We were quite curious and started asking why he decided to name his store Casa Ruiz if that wasn’t even his name. Joan, while laughing, gave us a pretty simple explanation: Ripoll is a pretty difficult name to pronounce for anyone who isn’t Catalan. Xavi, having noticed that fact, decided to name his store after his partner’s surname.
And maybe because of his quality products, or maybe because of the easy-to-pronounce name (in our opinion, probably both) the store took off so well that he was soon opening up another one.
The one we recently got in Barcelona is doing just as well as the other two. And the reason why this is happening is because of the service. In Casa Ruiz, every employee will assist you at the best of their capabilities. And let us tell you, the stakes are pretty high: for every ingredient the store sells, the employees provide you with suggestions about what to do with it, starting with cooking times and temperatures and following up with full-on recipes.
We can’t even begin to imagine how much work these people must have put into their jobs. Yet they have inspired us to do the same thing in our own field, and maybe one day create our own little place where people will come not only for the quality of what we provide, but also for our service. What we really want is to run one of those places where people feel comfortable, safe, at home.
Needless to say, Casa Ruiz is one of those places.
