Have you ever experienced one of those times where everything just falls into place?
Last Saturday was one of those times. You see, the three of us are finishing up the first semester of university right now; and for the past couple of weeks things have started to get particularly challenging. The whole school is hectic and everybody’s busy; and to be completely honest, we were definitely starting to catch up on the level of stress as well.
So we decided to take a step back from our everyday routine and have some fun while investigating the story of a Hidden Spot that has been in Cerdanyola del Vallès for 36 years: Foto Ángel.
Foto Ángel is a photography studio founded by Ángel González. Ángel started out by studying photography, since he had always really enjoyed the creativeness that comes with the field. And because he loved being independent and free in his job, he decided to not work for anybody and open up his own studio. That is actually what he values most about his job, he told us; being able to do whatever he wants, to be as creative as he likes, as long as he’s fulfilling his clients’ wishes.
His studio is every artsy person’s dream, because he’s got all sorts of photography bits and bobs; and that is because, as an artist, he likes to adapt himself to every possible style of photography. He started out taking pictures with one bulb flash cameras, and since then, he’s tried and gotten to know every photographic process that has ever existed. Impressive, isn’t it?
Something else that we learned about him is that he’s gotten to meet a number of famous people over the years. His job actually took him to a record label where he was able to photograph many of the celebrities that were famous at the time. He’s also had the opportunity to be the official photographer in weddings of high-profile sports players, actors and other artists.
And with so many years of experience, there have sure been some anecdotes. While laughing, Ángel admitted to us that he’s made some pretty funny mistakes over the years, from realizing that he’d forgotten to put film into the camera after he finished the photoshoot to accidentally creating haunted photos. Yes, you read it well: one time there was a client who came by the studio claiming that his pictures looked supernatural, as if ghosts were creeping in the background. One quick check was enough for him to understand that there were no ghosts haunting the studio: he’d actually just developed the same film twice! Consequentially, bits and pieces of some pictures ended up making a translucid appearance into others. The results were fantastically creepy, with a pair of eyes hiding in the background, one half of a person, multiplied faces, and other paranormal looking stuff haunting the backgrounds of perfectly normal pictures.
But the thing is, these happy accidents always come with a creative job. And we actually got a good laugh out of listening to Ángel’s fun goofs in the business. When we finally returned home, we couldn’t help but talk about how much more relaxed we were feeling. After all, what could combat end-of-semester stress better than a fun dose of creativity?
