If the streets full of lights and jolly TV adverts are somehow confusing you, here’s a piece of news:
CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
Yes, it’s true! It’s already the sixth of December and everything is already starting to look as merry berry as ever. And, why deny it? We’re certainly going to town with the craze. And after an afternoon of making hot chocolate and dancing to the Michael Bublé christmas playlist, we decided to do one of the things we enjoy the most doing during the holidays: going to the movies.
It is safe to say that 2015 has been a year of amazing movies. There’s something for everybody, from the Hunger Games and Star Wars to Spectre, The Danish Girl or The Good Dinosaur. And as amazing these films are, and for most of them it is great to go to an IMAX, the truth is that we were craving something cozier.
This time we went to Cinemes Boliche, an independent cinema with a charm that has always kind of gotten us in a good mood. Since they opened, they have always tried to mantain a motto of only showing the movies they truly enjoy and think are good, rather than the ones that are the most comercial at the time. The idea behind it is to be able to create a family of loyal customers with whom they can become friends and enjoy the movies they all love.
The truth is that we had only been there a couple times before, and had never gotten to know the people so well; and that is why we decided to chat to the manager so that we could find out a bit more about Boliche’s story.
Alfons Mas was the person who started it all. He originally had the idea and decided to transform Casa Portavella (a building whith a history of many failed businesses) into every film lover’s home.
And something very cool about the movie theatre is the fact that almost every single movie is shown in its original language, regardless of the origin. That is something which very rarely happens here in Spain, since we have such a culture of dubbing movies. But here you can watch them in their original language, with subtitles either in Spanish or in Catalan. And let us tell you, this has actually helped us learn a couple words in foreign languages!
But the absolute best thing about Cinemes Boliche is one of the activities they offer: they’re called Movie Dinners and they really are what builds up the family that the team tries to create. In them, everybody who has just gone to see a movie in the theatre goes out to dinner afterwards, even if they don’t know each other at all. They all have dinner together, discuss the film and get to know each other. And with these dinners, Cinemes Boliche is able to create a bond between people and make them feel more at home than they could ever have imagined.
We certainly hope that we can become part of this family by the time christmas arrives.
