It will be of no surprise to any Spaniard if we say that tourists tend to think of Barcelona mainly as just the city. Not many foreign people know that Barcelona is actually also a province, and a pretty beautiful one, for that matter.
So this week we decided to step outside of our comfort zone and lose the busy streets and upbeat music in order to go to the peaceful town of Ripollet.
And while we were wandering through the streets we stumbled upon a restaurant which, with its modern feel and wonderfully looking food, made our mouths water before we had even gone in.
We couldn’t have been happier with our choice. Lunch at Centre Restaurant was an amazing experience, not only because the food was amazing but because we got to meet the owner and talk to him for a while.
Jose Luis Moya first opened his restaurant 22 years ago (making his establishment the oldest business in our blog!). He first came up with the idea after working in several different high-profile restaurants and realizing that his next step was opening up his own place.
His business started out as a combination between a bar and a restaurant, to which he later on added a wood oven in order to make homemade pizzas as well since he actually had experience working in an Italian restaurant. After a while, he remodeled the whole place in order to make it a full-on Mediterranean restaurant; and consequently a lot of his clientele changed.
Since the food was so good, we decided to ask about it for a bit. He actually told us that he’s extremely self-demanding about whatever he cooks. All of his ingredients are of top-notch quality, and everything that he serves is artisanal, from sauces and bread to homemade pasta and desserts. He even makes his own ice creams and sorbets. And it really pays off: everything tasted amazing, and we certainly know it was way healthier than whatever we would have eaten somewhere else.
We then asked him what his favorite thing about being a cook was. With a smile, he told us that one of the things he likes the most is to set himself up for new challenges and learn new recipes. The effort and dedication that comes with his job is worth it, because he really enjoys managing to make his clients happy. He told us that what he values the most is the people who like his food and end up coming back; and some people have been coming back for years.
And we really couldn’t be happier after having this experience. This has really made our minds think about how you do not need to have an “all green” concept in your restaurant in order to make it healthy and enjoyable. It just takes good ingredients, good preparation, and a great amount of determination in order to make it happen. After all, the quality of the food you want to serve to your customers is entirely up to you. And Centre Restaurant has inspired us to take care of our future clients, just like they do.
We can’t wait to go back and enjoy another one of their meals!
